Scoring Items 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18

The score for items 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 is the same as the number the person has given as his or her answer.

Scoring Items 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, and 17

The score for items 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, and 17 is different than the number the person has given as his or her answer. These items are “reverse-scored”.

Calculating Total HFS and HFS Subscale Scores

Once all items have been scored, item scores are summed to calculate the Total HFS score and each of the three subscale scores.

  • Forgiveness of Self Subscale score is the sum of the item scores for items 1 to 6.
  • Forgiveness of Others Subscale score is the sum of the item scores for items 7 to 12.
  • Forgiveness of Situations Subscale score is the sum of item scores for items 13 to 18.
  • Total HFS score is the sum of the item scores for all 18 items.

Scores on the three subscales can range from 6 to 42.
Scores on the Total HFS can range from 18 to 126.
